STEM-H in the Summer

Calling all rising 4th – 12th graders who are explorers, helpers, creators, investigators, coders, analyzers, and answer-seekers. You are invited to take part in STEM-H in the Summer at John Tyler Community College.

In July and August 2016, Tyler and its partners are holding classes and camps designed for upper elementary through high school students who want to discover more about science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health care.

Tyler’s IT Exploratory Camp

Every day, businesses, governments and others collect and transmit confidential information, and every day, hackers from all around the world attempt to steal that data or disrupt the day-to-day work of these organizations. In Tyler’s IT Exploratory Camp, students will discover how cybersecurity experts protect computers, mobile devices and networks from these attacks, as well as investigate attacks that have already occurred. They’ll also learn about career opportunities in this fast-growing field.

Open to: Rising 10th – 12th graders
Camp Hours:  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tyler’s MAC 131 Precision Machining Lab I for High School Students

As technology evolves and becomes more and more integrated into everyday life, the need for experts in precision machining grows. MAC 131 Precision Machining Lab I at John Tyler introduces high school students to this career field. During this class, students will learn the basics of precision machining, including how to use the machine tools safely. They’ll also get a chance to work with industry-scale precision machining equipment in Tyler’s Advanced Manufacturing labs. Students will earn two college credits for completing this nine-day course.

Open to: Rising 11th – 12th graders
Class Hours:  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

MSiC Camp Innovation @ John Tyler Community College

The MathScience Innovation Center’s Camp Innovation offers more than 25 adventure-packed classes sure to inspire future scientists, researchers, coders, engineers and mathematicians.

Open to: Rising 4th – 9th graders
Camp Hours: Weeklong classes offered in half-day (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.) and full-day (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) formats.

Dates and Locations:
July 18 – 22, Tyler’s Chester Campus
July 25 – 29, Tyler’s Chester Campus
August 1 – 5, Tyler’s Midlothian Campus
August 8 – 12, Tyler’s Midlothian Campus

Cost:  $110 per half-day session / $220 per full-day session

Health Career Explorers Camp

Today’s health-care careers are wide-ranging and encompass a variety of settings from hospitals, laboratories, and doctor’s offices to clinics, patient homes, and assisted living facilities. Southside Health Education Foundation’s Health Career Explorers Camp gives students the opportunity to learn more about these opportunities. During the camp, participants will get real-life experiences in health care and higher education settings.

Open to: Rising 10th – 12th graders
Camp Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
