President’s Welcome

Mission
The Office of the President is charged with the executive oversight of the institution and all its constituent parts. The Office provides leadership and direction to the administration of the College and conducts a variety of informational and advocacy activities with external constituencies. Operating within broad guidelines provided by the Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, the President’s Office assumes full responsibility for ensuring that the mission and vision statements of the College are fully executed.

Vision
Through the leadership and direction of the President’s Office the institution will be an exemplary member institution of the VCCS, providing superior education, training, and service to the residents of its seven-county, three-city service area.

Our office is comprised of three staff members:

Dr. Marshall W. Smith is the sixth president of John Tyler Community College, and its longest serving chief executive officer. He became president of the institution in September 1990, and in 2010, he celebrated his 20th year as its president.
