CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – More than 110 students received assistance with their 2012-2013 college education expenses thanks to $171,785 in scholarships recently awarded by the John Tyler Community College Foundation, Inc. This was a record-breaking year for the Foundation’s scholarship program, not only was more scholarship money than ever awarded, but more total scholarships than ever were awarded, 111, and more students than ever applying for scholarships, 249. Students received scholarships based on academic performance, programs of study and financial need. At the recent Scholarship Celebration Night, the recipients had the opportunity to share their stories and to thank the donors who generously support the Foundation’s scholarship program.

Two guest speakers, Jeff Ukrop, CEO of Broiggs LLC, and Shawn Fenner, a 2012 graduate of the JTCC Nursing Program and newly hired by CJW hospital, delighted the 271 guests with their heartfelt, energized, motivational messages about the importance of relationships and adapting to change.

“What a pleasure it is to see donors, scholarship recipients, and their families meet for the first time.  In many cases, students would not be able to attend John Tyler without financial support.  Donors are able to see and hear ‘firsthand’ just how important their scholarship investment really is and what a positive difference they are making in the lives of these students,” said Beverley Dew, executive director of the JTCC Foundation.  “We are constantly challenged to secure more scholarship funds for the increasing number of students truly needing financial help.  The celebration is a great platform to ask for community help in spreading the word about scholarship investment at the College.”

The John Tyler Community College Foundation relies on the generosity of the community to continue its work in securing the future of the College, its students, its faculty and its staff.  Since most of the College’s graduates live and work in the area, gifts to the Foundation are an investment in the future of the community.  Through donations, grants and endowments, the Foundation is able to provide scholarships for students, to fund academic programs and capital projects, to renovate and modernize classrooms and labs, and to encourage the professional development of John Tyler Community College’s faculty and staff.  This work ensures the College continues its pledge of providing academic excellence while expanding the services it offers to fulfill escalating workforce requirements.

John Tyler Community College is a two-year, public institution of higher education and is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler offers quality and economical opportunities for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, train for the workforce, or switch careers. The College, which served more than 14,895 students during the 2011-12 academic year, offers 17 associate degrees, eight certificates, and 35 career studies certificates. The institution also serves 15,000 non-credit students and more than 1,000 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The College also is committed to sustainability. In July 2010, it received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for Hamel Hall on its Midlothian Campus, becoming the first in the Virginia Community College System to receive such recognition. John Tyler Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
