The pin, given to graduate candidates, symbolizes the school of nursing where the students earned their clinical experience, achieved academic credentials and began their socialization into the profession. The ceremony marks the completion of that rigorous training and is often viewed with the same importance as commencement.

Jordan, Singleton and Humphrey all came to Tyler soon after the College opened in 1967, a time when the community college concept was new in Virginia. Over the years, the three have worked for a number of presidents, witnessed a fire on the Chester Campus in 1988, and watched the role of the College in the community expand.

The College’s Faculty Association recently described them as “forever a part of the heart and soul of the College,” and that is certainly true.  They will forever a part of the history of John Tyler Community College.  Watch the video to hear more of their stories.

Theresa Windham Service Award
This award was first presented in 1996 in honor of Theresa Hands Windham who succumbed to a sudden illness in 1993 at the age of 37 while serving at the College’s coordinator of grants and development.  During her short tenure at the College, Ms. Windham’s kindness and selflessness touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff.  Always smiling, always striving to help others, she was loved by all who had the good fortune to make her acquaintance. This award recognizes students who personify Ms. Windham’s dedication to service without regard for personal gain or adulation. This year’s recipient is Donna Simmons (23231). Ms. Simmons is in the Human Services, Pre-Social Work Specialization program at John Tyler, and serves as the president of the Human Services Club and as secretary of the College’s Student Council. She received the award in recognition of her service to John Tyler and the local community.

Sherwood Forest Art & Literary Review Winners
The Sherwood Forest Art & Literary Review is an annual publication of John Tyler Community College and is published in conjunction with the annual student literary and art contest. The publication has highlighted the creativity and talent of John Tyler students since 1968. Students submit entries in the categories of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and art.  Judges review and select first, second and third place winners in each category. Honorable mention awards may be given if the judges choose to recognize additional entries. The winning entries are published in the Review. John Tyler Community College Alumni Association and Foundation Award Recipients
The Defining Your Future Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by the John Tyler Community College Foundation. The award is presented annually to a student for outstanding academic performance and volunteer service to John Tyler and who the faculty and staff believe will achieve great success and will define the future of the College and the nation.  

The Rising Star Award was established by the John Tyler Community College Alumni Association to be presented annually to a student who faculty and staff believe will not only be an ambassador for the College but will also distinguish himself or herself in his/her chosen career.

The Daniel Dalton Award, named in honor of a John Tyler Community College founding faculty member, is presented annually to an outstanding club or student organization that exhibits excellence in the areas of service to the College, commitment to community service, and dedication to academics. This year’s award was presented to the Human Services Club. The award was accepted by the club’s president, Donna Simmons (23231) and the club’s advisors, Dr. Christine Diggs and Dr. Yvonne Barry. 

The Marshall Denison Society, named for the College’s second president, was established to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the student activities program at John Tyler. Mary Beth Wentworth, associate professor of English, was this year’s inductee.  Ms. Wentworth’s was recognized for her devotion to her students and for her dedication to enriching their lives through study abroad programs. Her work has helped produce an outstanding international education program at John Tyler, and her efforts have made study abroad accessible to so many John Tyler students.

CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Three years ago, if you told Julianna Morgan she would be one of the top community college students in Virginia, she would have laughed. Morgan says that’s because she was a very different person three years ago when she started taking classes at John Tyler Community College. At the time, she was a 27-years old single mother with a one-year old son. She says she lacked confidence and was not sure she had what it takes to succeed in college. She doubted herself academically, in part, she says, because she had dropped out of high school. In the years after she left high school, Morgan obtained her GED, entered the workforce, and gave birth to her son. It was then that she discovered she wanted more for herself and for her little boy. So, she gathered her courage, drove to John Tyler Community College, enrolled, and began her college career.

Morgan describes herself as so overcome with anxiety when she walked into her first class that she had to turn around and walk out of the room to catch her breath. That feeling, however, changed quickly. Morgan says with the encouragement of the College’s faculty and staff, she began to overcome her fears and her doubts, and soon, she discovered something she didn’t expect – a love for history. Once ignited, that passion blossomed. When the College started a History Club, Morgan was one of the first to sign up. She was vice president and for the past year has been the club’s president. Her involvement in that club was just the beginning. She then became part of the College’s Student Council, volunteered at numerous John Tyler events, such as Fool for Art, and took an active role in many College activities. She made new connections, enjoyed the sense of diversity she says she found at Tyler, and found her confidence building. At the same time, Morgan excelled academically.

It is all those achievements that recently earned Morgan a coveted spot on the Top Ten All-Virginia Academic Team, a recognition that showcases the best community college students in the Commonwealth as ranked by USA Today, The Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and the American Association of Community Colleges. When asked what it’s like to receive this honor, Morgan smiles shyly. “I was floored when I heard the news. I’m also so proud,” she says.

Morgan also is excited about another major achievement. She is just days away from graduating from John Tyler Community College with a General Studies associate degree. “I know I’ll be emotional as I walk across the stage,” says Morgan, “If I look out in the audience and see my son and family, I’ll probably cry.” After celebrating her accomplishments at Tyler, Morgan will start working on her next goal – a bachelor’s degree in history from Virginia Commonwealth University. After that, she hopes to continue her education in history by earning a master’s and eventually a doctorate degree.

Morgan is proof that a lot can change in three years – especially one’s view of oneself. Morgan says she now sees herself as a new person – one who is confident, who is a leader, and who has the strength to overcome challenges. She says she’s thankful to the people of John Tyler for believing in her, for pushing her to achieve her dreams, and for helping her discover who she really is.

Andrew Hart and Emily McGee don’t know each other, but they share an important distinction. They are the first high school students to graduate from John Tyler Community College with an associate degree before graduating high school. Getting to this point required guts, ingenuity, and lots of hard work. Both had to forge new territory as they explored ways to complete high school and their associate degree programs at virtually the same time. To accomplish this feat took a lot of planning; time management; a willingness to take courses on campus or online; and support from their families, friends, high schools, and John Tyler faculty and staff. It also took a combination of dual enrollment classes, concurrent courses, and AP credits. Andrew and Emily both admit that they had to give up some of their free time to juggle their college and high school assignments, but both agree that it was worth the extra work.

Andrew will graduate from Tyler in May with an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts with an International Studies Specialization. He will celebrate his graduation from Chesterfield County’s Clover Hill High School in June. Using a transfer agreement, he will continue college at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he plans to double major in political science/international relations and homeland security. After that, he is considering working toward a master’s degree. His goal: to get a job with the State Department.

Emily also will graduate from John Tyler in May. Her degree will be an Associate of Science in General Studies. In June, she will receive her diploma from James River High School in Chesterfield. She will continue her studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she plans to study fashion merchandising. She hopes her head start on college will give her the ability to take advantage of internships and study abroad opportunities sooner, which will help her get ahead in the very competitive fashion industry. Eventually, she says she’d like to own a boutique and sell her own clothing designs.

Thomas Wise refuses to be part of a negative statistic, and he’s worked hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. Thomas grew up in the foster care system, and he knows that far too often, children in that system don’t graduate from high school and even fewer finish college. But, Thomas was determined to beat the odds, and he is. This month, he will finish his Associate of Science in Business Administration, becoming the first student in the John Tyler Community College Great Expectations program to graduate. Great Expectations is a program that provides much-needed support to youth who are aging out of the foster care system. This support comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s helping a student navigate the financial aid or class scheduling process, and sometimes it’s helping a student find transportation or a place to live. The support also comes in the form of a mentor, who offers encouragement, advice, and when necessary, a little nudge to get back on track. Thomas says the support he received through Great Expectations has been critical to his success, especially when he realized he might want to change his degree focus. Originally, Thomas planned to go into engineering. He found the program to be challenging and the material and instructors to be interesting. But, then came a surprise. He got a job as a retail merchandiser, and he discovered he loved the work. Thomas says he had been shy in high school, so he was amazed to learn that he enjoyed sales and customer service work. His mentor encouraged him along the way, and with her help, he transitioned out of the Engineering program and into Business Administration. She’s also helped him plan for his next academic steps – a bachelor’s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges, announced today that Dr. Edward E. “Ted” Raspiller will become the 7th president of John Tyler Community College beginning August 5, 2013.

Raspiller is currently president of the Brazos County Campuses at Blinn College in Bryan, Texas. Previously, he directed the Community College Leadership doctoral program at Old Dominion University.

“I’ve known Ted for more than a decade,” said Dr. DuBois. “He brings to the table the right skills and the right experience to lead John Tyler Community College to the next level.”

"The JTCC College Board, faculty, staff, and students are excited about Dr. Raspiller's arrival as our new president – and his enthusiasm and commitment to creating a success story for every student," said Art Heinz, chair of the John Tyler Community College Board.

Raspiller succeeds Dr. Marshall W. Smith, who retires this year after serving as John Tyler Community College president for nearly 23 years.

The institution also serves 15,000 non-credit students and more than 1,000 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The College also is committed to sustainability. In July 2010, it received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for Hamel Hall on its Midlothian Campus, becoming the first in the Virginia Community College System to receive such recognition. John Tyler Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The hospitals, nominated for the award by John Tyler Community College, were recognized at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

Over the years, HCA Virginia Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals have generously supported John Tyler Community College in numerous ways. In 2006, they provided building space to the College’s Nursing Program, allowing the program to move to one location and to expand. The hospitals also support the John Tyler Community College Foundation’s scholarship program, giving students the financial assistance needed to continue their educations. And, HCA Virginia Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals provide educational resources to students in the College’s Nursing Program.

Tim McManus, chief operating officer for the hospitals and a member of the John Tyler Community College Foundation Board, accepted the Award for Leadership in Philanthropy on behalf of the hospitals. Quoted in the program distributed for the awards luncheon, McManus and Trula Minton, chief nursing officer for the hospitals, call community colleges a “vital link for people to receive excellent training,” adding, “We contribute as part of our mission to be a source of education and clinical education for nurses and other health professionals, which is an important part of our partnership with community colleges.”

“The College’s Nursing Program has been transformed thanks to a strong, long-standing partnership with HCA Virginia Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals,” cited Beverley Dew, executive director of the JTCC Foundation.  “Margaret Lewis, former president of HCA’s Central Division and current president of its Capital Division, is a JTCC nursing grad and an emeritus member of the JTCC Foundation Board who paved the way for an iron-clad partnership that includes a physical home for JTCC’s Nursing Program at CJW and generous financial support for academic programming and nursing scholarships.  The fact that 54% of the hospitals’ new nursing hires hail from the JTCC program speaks to the incredible nursing pipeline created by the partnership.  Over the years, HCA support has catapulted JTCC’s Nursing Program to rank among the best in the state.  The hospitals’ new CEO, Tim McManus, continues JTCC support to ensure an academically robust program that provides excellent nurse training.  This is, indeed, a win/win partnership.” 

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy luncheon is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the statewide foundation.  This marks the eighth year the awards have been given.

This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders has contributed a combined total of more than $17 million dollars to Virginia’s Community Colleges.

“The generosity of the two dozen philanthropy leaders we honor represents a brilliant collection of individuals, foundations and employers who believe in the sheer beauty of transformation,” says VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois. “They believe in the knowledge and skills that Virginia’s Community Colleges offer to every Virginian.  We thank them deeply for the partnerships that demonstrate the brilliance of philanthropy.”

The honored philanthropists will have a scholarship named after them which will be awarded next fall to a student attending their community college.

The luncheon’s keynote speaker was Mr. Michael Quillen, founder and former chairman of the board for Alpha Natural Resources.  A former member of the State Board for Community Colleges, Mr. Quillen has also served on the board of the VFCCE and was himself a recipient of the Leadership in Philanthropy award in 2007. He is currently rector of the board of visitors for Virginia Tech.

John Tyler Community College is a two-year, public institution of higher education and is the fifth largest of the 23 community colleges in Virginia. With campuses in Chester and Midlothian and off-campus classrooms throughout the area, John Tyler offers quality and economical opportunities for students who want to earn a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, train for the workforce, or switch careers. The College, which served more than 14,895 students during the 2011-12 academic year, offers 18 associate degrees, eight certificates, and 35 career studies certificates. The institution also serves 15,000 non-credit students and more than 1,000 companies and government agencies annually through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The College also is committed to sustainability. In July 2010, it received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification for Hamel Hall on its Midlothian Campus, becoming the first in the Virginia Community College System to receive such recognition. John Tyler Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
