John Tyler Community College Closing Policy
The safety of students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance to John Tyler Community College. When an event occurs within the service area or at one or more of the campuses, the College will make every effort to report closing information in a timely and accurate manner. The challenge faced by the College is that such events are generally unpredictable and conditions often change as the event progresses. The College will make every effort to notify students, faculty and staff of closing information using the criteria indicated within this policy.
John Tyler Community College Service Area
The College’s service area consists of the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg, as well as the counties of Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Surry and Sussex.
Closing and Delays Definitions
Cancelling or delaying the opening of classes is dependent on the time, location, and severity of an event. Classes may be cancelled college wide by day or evening status. They may also be cancelled by class meeting time or location (campus or building) of the class.
If an event necessitates that the college open late, every effort will be made to make the announcement before the beginning classes to avoid having students and faculty and staff come to campus only to be turned away. However, this may not always be possible. If students, faculty, or staff are already in route, the College will post security officers or other college personnel at campus entrances to notify people as they come onto the campus. Students, faculty, and staff should heed by such personnel and avoid coming on campus while an event is being handled by emergency preparedness personnel. In many situations the buildings will be locked to preclude students, faculty, or staff wandering into an area that may be affected by the incident or into areas not manned by college personnel.
When the College announces that it is closed, all day and evening classes are cancelled and administrative offices are closed at the Chester and Midlothian campuses, the JTCC Nursing Education Center at CJW Medical Center, and the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) at the Featherstone Professional Center. When feasible, this decision is generally made between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., calls are made to local television and radio stations, the website is updated and Tyler Alert messages are sent immediately thereafter. When needed, the decision may be made the night before or at any point during the day when an event is in progress. This applies to weekday and weekend classes.
When the College announces that day classes are cancelled, all classes that start between 7:00 a.m. and 4:59 p.m. are cancelled, and administrative offices are closed as well. The decision is generally made between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., calls are made to local television and radio stations, the website is updated, and Tyler Alert messages are sent immediately thereafter. When needed, the decision may be made the night before or at any point during the day when an event is in progress. This applies to weekday and weekend classes.
When the College announces that evening classes are cancelled, all classes that start at 5:00 p.m. or later are cancelled, and administrative offices are closed as well. The decision is generally made between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., calls are made to local television and radio stations, the website is updated, and Tyler Alert messages are sent immediately thereafter. When needed, the decision may be made the night before or at any point during the day when an event is in progress. This applies to weekday and weekend classes.
If the duration of the event is known and a delayed opening is required, classes scheduled to begin before the delayed opening time will not meet unless there is one hour or more remaining for the class when the College opens. Those classes will begin when the College opens and end at the regularly scheduled time. In some cases multiple notifications may be provided as an event unfolds.
Location Specific Closings or Delays
Location specific closings or delays will be added, as applicable, to the criteria above for day classes, evening classes, and delayed openings. Location specific information may be based on campus or outreach location or building as follows:
Nicholas Student Center
Community Workforce Alliance at Featherstone Professional Center
JTCC Nursing Education Center (NEC) at CJW Medical Center
When location specific closings or delays are announced, only those students, faculty, or staff with offices or classes in those locations during the times announced are affected. NOTE: In some cases, supervisors may elect to have employees report to an alternate location to work during the event. Supervisors or managers will contact employees directly if required.
Classes in Progress
If the College must close after classes already have begun, John Tyler security and other College personnel will notify faculty, staff, and students in administrative and instructional areas. An announcement will be made to local television and radio stations immediately thereafter.

Students should exercise their own judgment when determining if it is prudent to attend classes. Students must always notify their instructors when they cannot attend class due to an event for which the College may or may not experience a closing or delayed opening. Faculty and staff must consult their supervisors for leave approval if they cannot come into the college during an event for which the College may or may not experience a closing or delayed opening.
