Overview

The safety of students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance to John Tyler Community College. When inclement weather or an emergency situation occurs that affects the college’s operations, the college will make every effort to report closures and/or changes to its operations to the college community in a timely and accurate manner.

The decision to change the college’s operations will be dependent on a number of factors, including but not limited to the time, location, severity and scope of the situation and any orders and guidance received from local, state and federal agencies.

Changes in Operations

Examples of possible changes in college operations include, but are not limited to, closing the college; closing campuses or buildings; moving services and instructions to remote formats.

Inclement Weather and Driving Conditions

The college’s service region spans a large geographic area that includes several counties and cities. During inclement weather events, driving conditions within the college’s service area may vary. In cases where the campuses are open, students and employees should exercise their own judgment when determining if it is prudent to come to campus. Students must notify their instructors and faculty and staff must consult their supervisors when they are unable to come to campus due to conditions in their area.

Communications

If the college must alter its operations, it will make every attempt to announce those changes in a timely manner. However, due to the nature and unpredictability of emergency situations, including inclement weather events, the college cannot guarantee the timing of decisions and notifications.

When a change in operations must occur, the college will use multiple communication methods to share this information with faculty, staff and students. The methods used will be dependent on the situation and could include:

  • Tyler Alert notifications
  • Alert on the college’s website
  • Email to employees and students
  • Posts to the college’s Facebook and Twitter pages
  • Announcements on local television and radio stations
  • Announcements over the college’s public address system
  • Announcements by college security officers or other college personnel
  • Recorded messages on the college’s main phone line (804-796-4000 or toll free 1-800-552-3490)
  • Messages on indoor campus TV monitors our outdoor campus electronic signs

In addition, students may receive direct communications from their instructors and employees may receive direct communications from their supervisors.
