Placement Test Schedule on June 22 - Due to scheduled maintenance on the Virginia Placement Test (VPT), Tyler’s Testing Center is altering its VPT testing hours on Saturday, June 22. On that day, the last time a student will be allowed to start the VPT is 11:59 a.m. This is to ensure students taking the placement test have sufficient time to complete it before the system shuts down for maintenance. Declare a Major

There are three ways to declare a major at Tyler:

Select a major on your application.

New students can declare a major when they apply to Tyler. Simply select your chosen major on your application.

If you are not sure what you want to study, did not select a major when you applied, or need to make a change to your major, you have two more options:

Meet with an advisor in the Advising Center.

Advisors can help you select a major based on your goals.  If you are transferring from another college or university, bring a copy of your transcript with you when you visit the Advising Center.

Declare a major online.

Can’t make it to campus to meet with Advising? Complete the form at, and our advisors will work with you to declare your major without coming to campus.

What are the benefits of declaring a major?

  • You’ll have a clear path to graduation.
  • You’ll have the added support of an advisor familiar with your major, employment options and transfer opportunities.
  • Declaring a major is a requirement of financial aid and many scholarship opportunities.
