around the world in 72 daysIt was on this day, May 5th, 1864, 151 years ago that pioneering journalist Nellie Bly was born. At the age of 21, Bly lived in Mexico for six months, writing reports on the daily lives of Mexican people. Shortly afterwards, Bly faked insanity in order to be committed to a women’s lunatic asylum, going on to write accounts of the horrific treatment and living standards of the asylum’s inmates. After this! Bly undertook an around-the-world journey over the course of 72 days, sending telegraphic dispatches back to a New York newspaper. Bly continued to write opinion pieces and journalism throughout her life, covering the suffragette movement and WWI.
The JTCC Libraries carries Bly’s collected writings…come and check them out!
