LA RHONDA is based on the film, play, and improv form La Ronde. The film is based upon the play by German playwright Arthur Schnitzler. All ten scenes of his play only feature two actors, each individual actor appearing in two scenes in a row.
The improvisational performance form La Ronde works like a circle of two-person scenes. Each new scene has one new player and one player who was in the previous scene. The person who stays on stage remains the character they were in the previous scene and the new player chooses a new character to play and a new location and situation for the scene. In a simple La Ronde, each player plays one character and only one character, and the scenes continue until the first player to leave returns and "completes the circle."
In a nod to these formats, LA RHONDA began with a search for eight playwrights willing to write an original piece on a deadline based on work by the other playwrights. Once we chose our eight playwrights after a competitive application process, we devised a schedule whereby each playwright would have one week to write their 10-minute play.
